Stainless Steel Strip
Manufacturing stainless steel strip is a multi-step process. First,
the raw materials are melted together in an electric furnace for 8
to 12 hours, until they reach their recrystallization temperature.
The molten steel is then cast into semi-finished forms called
blooms, billets, slabs, rods and tube rounds. The unfinished shapes
then undergo a forming process such as cold rolling, in order to
become stainless steel strip.
Heat-treatable stainless steel can also be hot rolled, which is
generally the same process except the process is done at
temperatures that are above the recrystallization temperature of
the metal. The most common grades used to form stainless steel bars
include 304 and 316. The 300 series are types of austenitic
stainless steel, meaning that they are useful in mild, harsh and
corrosive environments as well as being non-magnetic.
Stainless steel 316 strip is nickel-chromium austenitic steel with
the addition of molybdenum, which improves the overall corrosion
resistance against chloride environments. The standard
high-performance SS 316 Strip offers excellent forming and welding
characteristics that will be used to manufacture these alloy
products into various shapes. Apart from this, UNS S31600 Stainless
Steel Strips does not require post-weld annealing.

Hot rolled stainless steel strip is a semifinished product obtained
from the hot rolling of slabs or billets and is produced for
conversion by cold rolling.
Cold rolled stainless steel strip is manufactured from hot rolled,
annealed and pickled strip by cold rolling on polished rolls.
Depending on the thickness desired, the cold rolling requires
various numbers of passes through the mill to effect the necessary
reduction and to secure the desired surface characteristics and
mechanical properties.
Only three rolled (unpolished) finishes (No. 1, No. 2 and bright
annealed) and one polished finish (mill buffed) are commonly
supplied on stainless steel strip.
